HOST celebrates dance and age. It brings together older dancers, artists, practitioners and choreographers, to dance and talk in a programme of workshops, presentations, discussions and performances.

The third edition of HOST takes ‘Let’s Create’ as its broad theme – but what do we mean by this and what do we want this year’s event to be about?

Two years into the Covid-19 pandemic, we want to take time to reflect on what has been happening in the lives of older dancers and ask, what’s next?

How did older dancers face the challenges of the pandemic and overcome them? What have been the positive outcomes? And what does that mean for the future? What’s next?

Let’s Create! The pandemic forced dancers to think differently and think outside the box, come together virtually and, when it was safe to do so, meet outside. It is evident this led to greater exploration of dance in outdoor spaces and dance on location – dancing beyond theatres. HOST will explore the creative tools and opportunities of site-specific work and present an outdoor, performance work commissioned for HOST and performed by EncoreEast.

Over the last 2 years there has also been a greater number of community dance works being filmed, screened and created. HOST will present more screendance than ever before and celebrate the new and creative ways that older dancers and community companies have continued to dance and celebrate their work through film.

A selection of practical and skills-based workshops will offer dancers the opportunity to build their creative toolbox and explore a range of genres and contemporary techniques, as well as delving into creative practices around site-specific, outdoor work and dance for film. A provocation and artist-led panel discussion will kick-off the national Conversations on Dance & Age taking place across HOST, Elixir and Ageless Festival.

So, let’s celebrate and let’s create!
